There will be a Classical Guitar Night at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse, 64 Main St. Cortland, on Thursday April 29 from 6:30 until 9:00pm. Classical guitarists from Ithaca College will perform music of Bach, Telemann and Villa Lobos as well as other less well known South American composers. If you love the guitar, don't miss this event! Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
Professor Pablo Cohen will present selections from South American repertoire. Always looking for new directions and possibilities, Cohen has a talent for finding unusual and interesting pieces. His expressive and thoughtful performances make him a great advocate of music that is outside of the traditional repertoire.
Prof. Cohen is head of the classical guitar program at Ithaca College and an affiliated artist at Cornell University. An endearing performer, Pablo Cohen has participated in solo, ensemble, and orchestral concerts in the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
Cohen recently received the Music Teachers National Association Award for his outstanding teaching; and this event will highlight the talents of many of his students. The guitar program at Ithaca College includes the study of traditional classical guitar literature with special attention to performance practices of the baroque and pre-classical periods. Research into new streams of repertoire is emphasized by finding and performing original repertoire and by mastering transcription techniques.
Performances will include several pieces for guitar quartet formed by students Drew Serafini, Brandon Clark, David Moore and Daniel Mahoney. This will include a piece written by student Nick Throop who grew up on funk/fusion/jazz electric as well as acoustic folk rock and has now branched out to many genres of music, more recently classical.
Sophomore Matt Gillen will perform music by Leo Brouwer. His present plans are to compete in major guitar competitions and perhaps someday be a college professor. Dave Moore, who will be presenting J.S. Bach's Cello Suite #IV hopes to make a living playing and teaching guitar.
Eric Pearson, who will perform music by Roland Dyens, is currently attending graduate school for music at Ithaca College. He has music degrees from SUNY JCC and SUNY Fredonia. In addition to teaching classes at Ithaca College, he teaches privately and works as a freelance performer in the area.
Classical Guitar Night is being organized by Cortland Music, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The event is made possible with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grant Program, a State Agency, and the Cultural Resources Council, a Regional Arts Council. Additional support was obtained from the Ralph R. Wilkins Foundation.
